Symmetry Closets Organized, wall unit, shoe storage, accessory storage, fashion display

Customers always ask us “How can I get more storage out of my closet space?”

There’s a growing array of exciting new products to meet those specialized needs. The newest addition is the Motorized Closet Lift from Häfele. This beautiful and functional product was recently featured on the nationally syndicated George to the Rescue show as the closet solution of choice for a young man in a wheelchair. It’s also an excellent solution for extremely high ceiling heights or for living in place needs, whether related to age, sports injuries or other range of mobility challenges. How it works: Using a remote control, the Motorized Closet Lift lowers a full closet rod of hanging clothing to an easily reachable height; the vertical lowering range can be customized. If you want to see it in motion for yourself, it’s locally installed and available for viewing at the Symmetry Closets Factory/Showroom in Holbrook, NY. “The Motorized Closet Life from Häfele is the ideal way to reclaim space and build either your closet or laundry area up, not out,” explains Scott Kaminski, Häfele’s Marketing Communications & PR Manager. “Our customers love that the wireless remote means the hardware does the work, not you.” The Closet Lift is also available in a manual, pull-down version.

The Organized Closet: Inspired Lighting and Accessories for Today’s Storage Needs

The closet has changed. Long gone are the days when outfitting a custom closet was a simple choice between polished chrome or brass closet rods and then some fancy decorative hardware. Nowadays, we have a lot more stuff, as well as a lot more real estate devoted to our closet areas. Dream closets complete with in-drawer electrical outlets, lighted or color-coordinated wardrobe tubes, built-in USB ports for thirsty devices and integrated, pull-out ironing boards are just the beginning. How Symmetry Closets and Adam Cassino Design Began Collaborating:

“A colleague of mine recommended Symmetry Closets to Adam when he realized he would need an expert closet designer for this project. When we spoke about the designs for the client’s ‘his and hers’ walk-in closets Adam knew exactly what he wanted and he gave us very detailed directions when it came time to install. That’s the nice thing about him, he knows exactly what he wants and expresses his design expectations very clearly, which makes the process that much easier for us. Bonnie wasn’t a part of the entire design and renovation process but she recalls the amount of precision Adam and his team exhibited, “Adam makes decisions quickly and efficiently and that make a large complex project move faster.” This applied to Bonnie’s part in designing the client’s two walk-in closets, “Adam gave us a very realistic time frame to produce the order and install it to the exact specifications he requested. We are in the design phase of another project with Adam and we’re enjoying the process.”

“Believe it or not, the interior of this 6,500 square feet family home started out as gothic and heavy. Our client brought us in before purchasing and asked if we could transform it into a light and airy transitional feel that they loved; we clearly could. Without delay, remodeling began, and in less than a year this now updated transitional home is a delight to be in. We changed the color palette of the entire home, changed stone surfaces, flooring, bathrooms, kitchen finishes, all lighting, and added elegant woodwork detail throughout. Now fully furnished in exquisite, comfortable, and usable pieces, this home has far surpassed our client’s expectations and is a beloved space for the family.”

A Homeowner’s Dream Come True: Interior Design Ideas Come To Life

Our time working with Adam has been nothing short of amazing. He brings innovative thinking, an innate technical mind, & a sharp eye for all things beautiful. These qualities combined have created the most incredible spaces in our home. His visions of a space are always creative while closely paying attention to the functionality of the room. He has become not only our designer but a dear friend in the process. He has a keen sense in getting to know his client which allows his work to reflect our own personal style throughout our home. We worked on many projects that involved designing from scratch custom pieces in our work spaces, closets, and living areas. Adam was always on the ball with every detail of the technical aspect of the symmetry closets, custom walk ins, custom built ins, custom drawers, soft close drawerswork. He inherently understood how each space & the furnishings should fit & flow together. This goes for all parts of the design process from our unbelievable entry chandeliers to the placement of our towels and trays in our bathrooms. His eye for details, color, and style comes naturally to him. The process of creating our new home could have been overwhelming to us. It ended up being the most exciting and special time because we had Adam to guide us.

Clean lines and an overall lighter feel throughout the home was achieved in the design project over the course of about a year. At that point the closets were finally in sight for the husband and wife. The clients wanted their closets to appear classy and leaning more on the extravagant side to match the rest of their newly designed home. The wife wanted plenty of room for her shoes and symmetry closet, wedding gown, wedding dress, wedding dress storage, custom shelving, shoe shelves, custom island, white closethandbags, and for them to display like a upscale dressing room. She also wanted even more drawer space, so they decided to put in a peninsula attached to the wall with a stunning white marble top. How to Play with Color and Texture

Every year, the design community selects a color of the year for décor, and for fashion.  This year, it’s Marsala!  The rich ruby color is everywhere—from fashion runways to accessories.  If you work with an interior designer, they’ll have the colors and styles factored into their unique design for your space.  When we partner with designers, they help select the paint colors that will illuminate your rooms, and also the coordinating wallpaper, fabric textures and closet color to enhance your experience of your spaces. Home office, symmetry closets, custom desk, red paint, office computer, office phone, white hciar, white office, white desk When it comes to storage design, we can customize that to almost any use.   For visual impact, the key factors are shown well in the handsome Long Island office shown to the right. There’s a dramatic contrast between the white cabinets and the limited use of the stunning wall color.  The strong linear impact of the door/drawer pulls and the curvy wallpaper pattern make for a highly functional and beautiful working space.

The complementary colors are chosen to pair well with Marsala.  As you can see in the selection below, these can be utilized to modulate the dominant color, or can be simply used on their own.

symmetry closets, marsala, paint colors, 2015

We’ve designed closets to complement these shades in many contexts.  Pantries are an area truly designed for “tasty” colors.  Whether it’s an open or closed door space, it’s an opportunity for a fun shot of color—in a way that doesn’t require the commitment of a whole room.

Another color-friendly space for those new to color is the children’s closets.  These are fantastic spaces for a touch of whimsy—and given a little time, the kids will grow into a new space anyway.  You can design these to your colorful heart’s content!

The Common Reach-In Closet: Can it still Sparkle?

Going Vertical Just One Way To Maximize Space

We’ve probably all tried to live with our closets having just a single hanging rod and a shelf above. Most people don’t need a whole closet of long-hanging space, so the area below the hanging clothes ends up full of boxes and bins of stuff that won’t fit elsewhere. The depth is limited and the ceiling height can be high. People hope they can fit bulky items on the top shelf, but with only a narrow space between it and the doorway, they just don’t fit. So, how do you find a way to work with the reach-in closet? Please try these expert tips. We’re certain you’ll have a happier relationship with your space, and find some beautiful sparkle too.

Use Principal of Verticality

This is the cure for the single rod-and-shelf conundrum. Add a storage system that includes double-hanging rods or shelves above half-hanging. Most clothing fits within half-hanging, and you’ll double your storage space. If you’re using a reach-in closet for off-season storage, consider setting it up with double hanging, long hanging and shelves for sweaters (so they don’t stretch out on hangers).

Drawer placement essential

If you want drawers, pull-out baskets or a hamper, they must be in the center of the swinging doors. This is necessary so the drawers can be opened easily, and so you can reach beyond them into the corners of the reach-in closet. And if there’s only a pair of sliding doors, that’s more limiting. You can have small pull-outs, but be very careful when measuring to make sure they’ll work in the open door opening.

Shelves keep It harmonious

Adding some shelves keeps the whole closet neater. It’s room for shoes, folded clothes, hats and scarves. With a custom-built closet system, the shelves are adjustable to adapt to the changing needs of your family. Ask your contractor to miter back the top shelf, to make it a narrower dimension. This provides a little more space for bulky items to fit through.

Children’s closets with adjustable features

Ask about having an extra closet rod to add in when your child needs larger sized clothes. With a custom closet system, the adjustable shelves can be removed, transforming a shelving unit into half-hanging, with a little planning ahead. Toy closets are usually reach-in closets as well. Just work with your contractor to make sure the storage system will accommodate the size and weight of the toys. And consider leaving space below the bottom shelves to roll in children’s toy cars and toy carriages. Above all, your space should work for you. A house full of reach-in closets can provide great storage for your family, as long as it’s designed to fulfill your particular needs. A reach-in closet can be beautiful as well as functional, just use some of the tips and you’ll see.

When it comes to your closet, some of us have lots of space for handbags & ties, drawers and an island (pictured above). But if you’re looking to create the illusion of a larger, smarter, and storage friendly space, just read on below…and keep in mind that these tips apply beyond the closet as well!

1-Strategic Use of Mirrors

You know that when you add mirrors to a small space, it creates a sense of openness, and the look of a larger space. But where & how to do it most effectively? Let’s look to the experts! Interior designer Adam Cassino used several tricks of the trade in these photos of a closet project we did together in Melville, NY. You’ll see that his use of full length mirrors pulls the eye upwards, while the reflection does what mirrors do so well–make us feel like the room keeps going. Also remember, you can add mirrors to just about any piece of furniture – but full-length mirrors will be the most beneficial in creating the illusion of a larger space.

2-Free up floor space

When you organize your closet, pantry, or any room that you want to feel bigger than it really is, remember to keep as much as you can off of the floor. The less floor space, the smaller your closet will appear. You can achieve this look by adding shelving to your walls, & if you wanted to take it a step further you can add lighting to some of your shelves to create more visibility. The key here is to create the appearance of a bigger space, so make it feel light and airy.

3-Use Drawers for Smart Storage

Taking a few pointers from the tiny house movement, and from our own storage solutions-a neat way to save on space is to create as many little secret hideaways for your appliances and/or accessories as possible. Slide-out bins help hide smaller items from view, while keeping them easily accessible.  For irons you can purchase a wall-mounted holder-which will keep that item off the floor but still easily visible. For laundry baskets you can use a tilt out hamper basket in a space that doesn’t get much use. For jewelry use a stackable container or something with a lid so you can store it away if you don’t want it to take up space on your dresser or vanity.

4-Play with lighting

For the project shown in the photos above and below, the designer selected shelf lighting to enhance the space & to allow the client to show her pretty things.   He also installed a beautiful quality lighting fixture, a chandelier that also pulls the eye up, expanding the feeling of vertical space. Thoughtfully plan out your lighting situation–if it’s a larger space, there’s nothing like working with an expert.  Depending on the location of the light source and the mirror, you will almost double the amount of lighting just by adding a full-length mirror to the closet door. Any room that is poorly lit will seem smaller and less appealing over all.

Last, but not least… Consider all your options

If you’re playing around with different options or design concepts, one effective time saving solution might be to hire a professional to do the heavy lifting for you. That way you can ensure it’s done correctly and avoid spending even more money on repairing mistakes in the long run. If you have the right attitude and perseverance for DIY projects then go on, take the wheel, and add some lux to your space!

WHY VISITING EXPERTS AT A HOME PRODUCTS SHOWROOM IS A MUST

By Sharon McGovern, Editor of NARI NYC/LI Design & Remodel Sure it’s great to do your research online before making any large home improvement purchase – in fact most homeowners search the internet to select products. But do you really know the quality, benefits and features of what you’re getting? Our NYC/LI NARI experts want you to know why it’s imperative that you test drive products before making a major purchase for your home.
“For large purchases you want to make sure you’re spending your money wisely, you owe it to yourself to see the range of what’s possible”
“Most customers think they know what they want, and then they see all the options available and change their minds,” said Jason Ashe, National Sales Manager for WindowRama. “We understand the importance of a customer touching and trying out products – windows and doors can be big ticket items in larger renovation projects,” he added. WindowRama offers 40 different brands of windows and doors, so the product selection process can be overwhelming. “Our showrooms are a destination – customers can see windows and doors in a real world atmosphere – similar to rooms in their own home,” Ashe said.
A popular trend in home renovation and design is indoor/ outdoor living. WindowRama’s 6000 square foot superstore in Farmingdale showcases multi-fold patio doors and screens so homeowners can see how these large doors operate. “We want the consumer to be excited about their purchase,” Ashe added. Green Art Plumbing Supply also implements the latest and greatest innovations for the home into their showrooms. Customers can explore possibilities that were merely ideas, until now. Green Art Plumbing Supply’s Huntington Station showroom features exquisite kitchens and baths as functional displays – providing a chance to experience products firsthand before making a decision.
“We put ourselves in our customer’s shoes,” said Stephanie Kurtzman, Marketing Director for Green Art Plumbing Supply. “Instead of buying online, visit a showroom to make sure the products you’re selecting fit your daily lifestyle and the unique look of your home,” she said. Green Art Plumbing Supply offers customers a truly unique showroom experience at their Huntington Station location – come in a bathing suit and try out a steam shower system in person! Custom closet design is generally an in-home shopping experience, says Bonnie Reich, owner of Symmetry Closets. “We measure, get a customer’s likes and dislikes, and can quickly provide a design and 3-D space plan. But you can’t get the experience of actually seeing materials in person and trying out options, unless you visit our showroom,” she said. “For example, there are all different grades of hardware – sometimes what you see in a picture may not be right for you. You need to engage with the product, and you just can’t replicate that experience.”
Lighting really makes a difference when you’re looking at materials, especially in custom closet and organization design. There’s LED lighting, strip lighting, drawers that light up and motion sensors that light up a space when you open a door. “There are so many lighting choices – cool, warm – unless you visit a showroom, you can’t experience that for yourself,” said Reich. According to Cambria USA spokesperson Aliki Vrohidis, different lighting can also affect the way you read colors, tones and movement in each of Cambria’s natural quartz countertop designs. “Additionally, our HighGloss and Cambria Matte surface finishes reflect light differently, so it’s important to see them both in person and in the correct lighting to see which you prefer,” she added. Cambria’s natural quartz design samples are a small select cut from a slab; they do not fully exhibit all the design characteristics of the final installed product. Variations in the natural quartz stone color, pattern, size, shape and shade are unique and inherent characteristics of the product. “Prior to making a purchase, we recommend viewing a full slab of the design’s movement in one of our showrooms or galleries,” Vrohidis said. Equally important to the experience of the showroom is a great team to work with. “Our incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and dedicated staff provide the best personalized service in the industry,” said Green Art Plumbing Supply’s Stephanie Kurtzman.
For those customers who already have a trade professional to work with, the team at WindowRama offers ‘contractor concierge service.’ “We invite customers to come in and meet with a specialist to select products and build a portfolio of features,” said Jason Ashe. WindowRama’s staff then work with the contractor’s measurements to place the order. Need an installer or financing? WindowRama offers those services as well. Working with an expert in person can make all the difference says Bonnie Reich of Symmetry Closets. “There are things you don’t even think of – for example, your height makes a difference in designing a closet. Many times we have to modify standard cabinetry to work for your specific needs,” she said. “For large purchases you want to make sure you’re spending your money wisely,” she added, “you owe it to yourself to see the range of what’s possible!” This article originally appeared in Design & Remodel Magazine
