How Symmetry Closets and Wendy Interiors Began Collaborating

Wendy and Bonnie have worked together on projects for several years, and have since cultivated a wonderful rapport through working together at the Interior Design Society, Long Island Chapter. “Wendy’s concern with her clients is to not only make her client’s home more beautiful but much more functional. Design Backstory: East Hampton Vibes

This home began as a bachelor pad. When the homeowner got married, he promised his wife that they would redo the townhouse. The wife is a very organized person and preferred everything to have its place. The clients wanted to make the most out of the limited space they had. This was a challenge because the 2-bedroom townhome did not have a garage or basement for extra storage. Wendy needed to find a way to utilize every possible space. Wendy and Bonnie determined how to overcome this obstacle. The result: the neutral, relaxed design remained consistent throughout the kitchen and living room area, into the home office and other built in storage areas. All-white, shaker style, custom built ins in the home office created a clean-cut and streamlined appearance.

Although the home office has more of a contemporary vibe than the rest of the interior design, there are still seaside details distributed lightly throughout the space.

Classic White Bedroom Closet —Storage with Style

The theme throughout the home was an updated, fresh and organized look. From the light fixtures to the lighter pieces of wood placed in different areas of the home, and the silver and chrome hardware – the home has a complete, consistent vision—and Wendy makes the whole project appear effortless. To ensure the space was utilized to its greatest organizational potential, Bonnie measured everything the clients own, including vacuum cleaners, cat carriers, coolers, beach chairs, folding chairs, blankets, wrapping paper, etc. The client was able to fit everything into their new closet with room to spare.

A Charming Kitchen and Living Room With Maximum Cabinet Space

Wendy needed to find creative storage solutions for the clients. She was able to do that by moving their washer/dryer upstairs, adding pantry space. She continued the kitchen cabinetry into the dining room, to create a generous amount of counter space and cabinet space.

Rose Ott Design invites Symmetry Closets to collaborate on a George To The Rescue (NBC) project in Island Park, NY.

This episode of George to the Rescue featured the Byrne family of Island Park, NY.

John “J.J.” Byrne, the oldest of two sons, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was seven years old, but that didn’t stop him from taking an active role in his community of Island Park, NY. JJ Byrne is civic-minded, he is assistant to the mayor of Island Park, an active member of the church, and he also works hard to fundraise and raise awareness for cystic fibrosis. J.J. fundraises for his team, “Team Shenanigans”, every year for the “Great Strides” walk by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Tara Byrne, J.J.’s mother, is also active in the community, where she served as past president of the PTA, and now acts as a member on the Island Park school board. The Byrne family agreed they wanted a nautical theme to come through in the new interior design of each space dedicated to the rescue. The ocean colors and textures would match the family’s love for the tight-knit beach community. Rose Ott Design, George to the Rescue, NBC,Symmetry Closets This was Rose Ott’s fourth time working with George To The Rescue, and for this specific project, Rose asked Bonnie to help with the family’s laundry room in desperate need of organization. They both agreed custom cabinet built-ins for the laundry room would be just the right touch for optimal organization. The laundry room was cramped with hanging clothes and other miscellaneous household items, and there was a lack of storage space to begin with.

Bonnie and her custom closet team got to work to create storage with style. They installed a wall hanging iron board and a storage unit with baskets for that extra, personalized home organization touch. To pair with the nautical theme, Bonnie knew brushed brass was the best hardware choice to match the overall design theme. White shaker style cabinets and crown moldings completed the look.

A Space Tailored to Keep Out Dust and Toxins, But Still Have Room For Enjoyment

Rose and her team, which includes her husband and builder, Frank Ott, wanted to create a specialized area for all of J.J.’s extracurricular activities. They wanted a clean and organized space, but also a place where J.J. can relax and enjoy his environment. The George to the Rescue team took out the carpeting in the front room that would soon become J.J.’s home office, to eliminate any amount of excess dust or toxins that might irritate J.J.’s medical condition. J.J. mentioned that some of the kitchen appliances were in disrepair, and the space just wasn’t up to par for any type of entertaining – be it holding meetings involving fundraising, PTA or school board meetings. In the kitchen they ripped out and replaced the ceiling due to mold, again to limit toxins possibly in J.J.’s breathing environment. With home entertainment in mind Rose’s team got to work in the kitchen. Ripping out a wall in the kitchen opened the space for more room to entertain guests, and for the family to enjoy more time in one of the most intergral parts of the Byrne Family home. Now, the Byrne Family is set up for many years of joy in their newly revitalized home. The Symmetry Closets team thanks Rose Ott, and the George to the Rescue team for the opportunity to be a part of this project!

An Organized Home Office for Any Room Size

Let’s face it… in the days of smart phones, high-speed internet and Wi-Fi, the work day doesn’t stop when we get home.

We all have projects or tasks that we need to do in the “off hours.” Many of us have started our own home-based businesses, or perhaps we telecommute a few days a week. More so, when the day is done, almost all of us need a dedicated workspace in our homes where we can “drop off” all the dead weight. Now at this point in our thought-process is where we start to think we just don’t have the space. This is how our dining room and kitchen tables become our home office space. Eventually, it may graduate to a small writing desk or card table in an unused corner. Our filing system consists of piles of paperwork and folders strewn about the table and any other nearby surface. We end up eating in front of the TV since there’s no room at the table. Our paperwork and bills are out in front of us all the time, the work day never truly ends and we’re always stressed-out. We think we don’t have the space to put it all away without misplacing it. Well, we’re wrong. Custom Home Office Design A home office doesn’t need to be a separate room with a door that closes us off from the rest of the world. A good work space can be a small surface that can fit the laptop, has some filing space and room for office supplies. Maybe there’s even room for a printer, but the important thing is to have someplace to put it all when we’re done with our day.

An organized office needs:

  • A file cabinet. Most of us only need one drawer.
    • Box up anything over a year old and put in a closet or other storage area.
    • Or scan your documents for electronic filing (back up often to a separate device).
    • Remember to go through and shred any personal financial documents over seven years old. (Business owners should keep those for ten years.)
  • A drawer for pens, paper clips, power cords and other small office supplies.
  • Maybe a closed cabinet with a slide-out shelf for the printer.
  • Space for extra paper, pads, binders and books.
A custom designed work-station eases stress and creates an escape in the home that we never realized possible. We all need to relax, and putting the work day away is one of the best ways to start.

How Symmetry Closets and Anne Marie Virgilio Began a Design Collaboration:

Anne Marie met us at Symmetry Closets through The Interior Design Society, Long Island Chapter, about two years ago – she was looking for custom closet design services to pair with her interior design projects. Since we’re both part of the same design-focused trade group, we work well together–it was a perfect fit. We originally met at a local IDS meeting – she had a project with Symmetry Closets in mind. Anne Marie met with one of our closet designers at her project site, where we worked out the design concept with her and developed plans and 3D renderings to discuss with the client. We’ve collaborated on several projects since.

The Kids Room-Converts to Home Entertainment Concept

This family has young children who required a centralized play space. We repurposed this area, between the living room & kitchen, to become a beautiful kids room, with toy storage space—with the ability to quickly put away toys behind doors and in drawers, and still stay organized. There’s a window seat, shelving for toys and books, and more. All with elegant shaker style cabinets and crown molding.

Of course, one day soon the children will no longer need this play space next to the family room & kitchen. What then? Anne Marie commissioned the proportions of the shorter wall unit to be a suitable future buffet and dry bar area. A simple change-out of the playful knobs, some decorative items on the counter surface, and this kid’s play area becomes a sophisticated home entertainment area.

As you can see in this image, built-in cabinets are the most efficient way to fit storage into narrow spaces—because you don’t even need to leave space for the base trim! Consider built-in wall storage for a hallway or a narrow dining room. We added the decorative side panels here to harmonize with the formal dining room to the right.

Anne Marie combined all her client’s needs into this efficient space using some tricks:
  • The room isn’t that big but the ceiling is tall. Running the custom office cabinets to the ceiling with crown molding makes this small home office seem huge.
  • Deep home office desk with shallower upper storage cabinets keep the tall unit feeling light despite the medium wood tone.

How to Add Style and Function to Your Home Office

Learn how to make your home office look more “home” than “office.”

Not so long ago, when someone wanted a home office, it was envisioned to be in dark wood tones with traditional styling. It was masculine in feeling – heavy and sturdy – and in a separate room of its own. Nowadays, many of us work from home from time to time. When people want a home office now, they want a more modern functionality. The home office is often in the center of the home; close enough to keep an eye on the kids, to listen for the dryer to buzz, or to stir the pot on the stove. Multi-tasking and computers have changed the way we work and live. And the style has changed, too. In many homes, it’s lighter and more streamlined, to blend with the style of the home. Sometimes people ask for help figuring out how to harmonize a new home office space with the rest of the home. We put together the tips below—so house harmony can be easier for everyone to enjoy.

Give your home office some style

• Similar colors: The paint throughout the rooms is a soothing light blue. The cabinetry in the kitchen, living area, bathroom, laundry and office are all the same color and similar style. The furniture coordinates as well. No matter where you are in the home, you feel like you’re part of a larger whole space. • Style jives: The lines are simple and clean—from the furniture and lighting to the built-ins, the style in all the rooms is similar enough to feel calm and coordinated. The crown molding wrapping around the home office draws the eye up and around the space and adds a touch of character. • Strategic accents: The smooth-looking woodsy brown floors and the liquid glass sailboat in the office offer a soft contrast to the built-in desk units. The strong vertical and horizontal lines of the desk and cabinets are emphasized by the long door and drawer pulls—distinctive details in a simple palate.

Make your home office work for you

What if you don’t have the opportunity to re-design your entire living space at the same time? Work with what you have—where possible, harmonize colors and styles within your existing furniture and spaces. Add built-ins where you need them—they use your space to maximum efficiency, and can blend easily into multiple rooms in the home. Start one room at a time. Pick a room, budget for your upgrade and recruit the right service providers for the project. Get this room to be what you want the rest to become—and repeat one room at a time. Above all, your space should work for you. If you’re working from home, your home office should reflect your specific needs and personal taste. With style and function, the home office no longer needs to be isolated; if it’s truly customized to your family’s needs, it may just become the most used room in your home.
